Scenes of piety and devotion quickly turned to devastation Tuesday as at least 16 people were killed in a stampede that broke out when massive crowds had gathered near the Ganges for a religious meet in this temple town.At least 16 people were killed in a horrific stampede at a religious event here Tuesday when tens of thousands had packed the banks of the Ganges, organisers said.Sixteen people - 14 women and two men - were killed in a stampede today during a religious ceremony attended by tens of thousands of devotees near the famous Har Ki Pauri ghat on the banks of the Ganges river. At least 32 people were also injured in the stampede that broke out when people tried to enter the 'yajnashala'(place of sacred fire ceremony) at Chandidweep Ghat for the birth centenary celebrations of Acharya Pandit Shriram Sharma.The stampede broke out when devotees tried to enter the gates of the Shantikunj Ashram to take part in a 'yagya' as part of the centenary celebrations of ashram founder Pandit Shreeram Sharma. The injured are being treated at a makeshift hospital near the camps.
